Today is another day earmarked on the calendar for New Music Monday. The team here at Not Just a Phase is positively giddy to be debuting Good Bones, Better Teeth from Jersey and Philly screamo darlings, Pyre.
The band needs no introduction when you consider their live appearances amongst star studded lines the last six months, including sets alongside screamo legends In Loving Memory and, most recently, a sold out show with recently reunited Frail. If I’ve made you feel guilty about living under the onslaught of new music coming our way this year, then let me enlighten you, these are East Coast baddies.
Pyre, is self-described as trans emo/screamo, and when you inevitably dig through their back catalog, you’ll find the description apt. Drawing influences from a wide variety of influences ranging from the greats like Saetia, Converge, combatwoundedvetran, Thursday, and Snowing. Hell, you might argue that Good Bones, Better Teeth manages to pack the frenetic energy of Saetia, with some of that jangly, catchy, emotional bullshit we all love from Snowing, while ending the track with a brand of metallic hardcore that made Converge, well, Converge.
Pyre’s writing process sees its collaborators (Dove, vocals; Green Rob/Blue Rob, guitars; Kayleigh, bass; Dan, drums) writing their riffs and sharing them back and forth to iterate on before bringing everything together as a group at practice where they refine and reorganize. This latest batch of songs from the band were recorded over multiple spaces, including live drum tracking and vocals in a now-defunct DIY space, while other instruments were recorded in Evan Dyer’s home studio. Evan performed all recording duties and also handled mixing and mastering. The final product is slick, but not overly produced. It maintains its raw, animal ferocity.
“MOST OF THE LYRICS ARE VERY PERSONAL AND ARE ABOUT PERSONAL TRAUMA AND LOSS AND THE STRUGGLES OF BEING A TRANS PERSON IN THE UNITED STATES.
A TAKEAWAY FROM THE ABLUM COULD BE THAT TRANS PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS FUCKING EXIST AND WE WILL ALWAYS BE LOUD AND PROUD AND OBNOXIOUS AND STAUNCHLY ANTI-FASCIST UNTIL WE ARE DEAD.”

This latest track is part of an upcoming release on Bored Science and Good Bones, Better Teeth is Pyre at their finest. This track should leave us all yearning for the release of what’s to come. We’re treated to tasteful doses of double bass, anthemic pop-emo sing alongs, all slipstreamed by emotional, chaotic screamo.
Don’t be silly, go smash the play button and enjoy this track. Then take yourself on a little Spring Break ‘25 to catch Pyre alongside In Loving Memory and Jeromes Dream in early April as they hit up Jersey, Rhode Island, and NYC.
I hear they’ve got some fun summer plans too..
Pyre is Dove on vocals, Green Rob / Blue Rob on guitars, Kayleigh on bass and Dan on the drums.
