BOY TALK - CHINO
About two years ago an emo band named “Boy Talk” came on the scene, with some of the band being in San Francisco while others are in the Bay area. Boy Talk consists of members who were previously in many other bands and you may recognize their guitarist Tyler by his vocals as he is currently in Wolf & Bear. Overall the band takes inspiration from Tommy Boys and early 2000s emo as well as screamo bands like Midwest Pen Pals and William Bonney. We had an in depth chat with the band to get a better picture of how this release came to fruition.
Their drummer and backup vocalist Chris provided a very high brow description of their writing process. "So Kevin usually does something like *weedly weedly bleep bloop and then he's like 'check this shit out' and I'm over in the back thinking like 'damn what time signature was that?' And Kevin's like 'idk’ and I'm like ‘let's just make it a breakdown’ *pshh* *pshh* *pow* *pow* and then Tyler goes ‘*breng* *breng* *nee-nee-nee-nee* rah rah!’ So then Teddy goes ‘Yeah! What he said! Rah rah rah tah tahh tah tahh’ and Andrew goes ‘brrrng brrrng’ and then we all say ‘Hell yeah’.”
Their guitarist Kevin spoke of their recording process. “For this batch of songs we recorded drums to tape and then bounced them back to pro-tools with engineer/co-producer Jesse Nichols. From there, we recorded all music individually in the studio control room. Jesse mixed and mastered everything. It’s always such a blast being in the studio! A lot of pizza, beer and good times hanging with our studio dad.”
Their vocalist Teddy holds these songs in high regards as well..
“THIS MUSIC IS REALLY SPECIAL TO ME, IT REMINDS ME OF SUMMER AND BBQS WITH TOO MUCH BEER. IN A WORLD THAT’S CONSTANTLY PUSHING US INTO ISOLATED BOXES IT’S ONE OF THE FEW THINGS THAT’S BROKEN ME OUT. I TRY TO KEEP THAT IN MIND WHEN WE WRITE”
TEDDY - @HAIR_EATER
“It’s always been a way to form a connection with people in the room who feel just as frustrated and angry with what’s going on in the world as I am. And if no one is listening than at least I’m in a room with 4 people who make me feel like it’s summer everyday. My main goal is to spread that feeling to everyone who listens. To make connections and to contribute the little bit I can to making life a little less stale and mundane.”
SO WHAT DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE?
“We’re excited to share the stage with our homies in Drought on 7/10 at Thee Parkside in SF, we'll be providing support for Frail Body on tour from IL, and the nor-cal OGs State Faults. Shoutout to The Hard Times Shows! After that we'll be hitting up the Gilman in Berkeley to support OLTH from the east coast, alongside Brahm and With Open Arms. Ineffable is a real one for setting that one up! After that we're just excited to share this debut EP with folks, we'd love to hit the road up north or down south by the new year!”
Boy Talk will be self-releasing their EP on a small run of hand numbered cassette tapes with a possibility of more formats to come in the future. It will be available on all streaming services and good ol' bandcamp on July 6th. Record labels, if you're reading this, they wanted to make it very clear that they’re single and ready to mingle.
