IN PASSING - PART WAYS
Ontario is a province in Canada that is ripe with bands of all genres, currently boasting an absolutely massive (and perhaps now even over saturated) hardcore scene, I think we have more bands per capita than any other Canadian province (zero facts to back this). With SO MANY hardcore bands locally popping off right now it’s become a bit trickier to stand out than it once was, and unfortunately, Canadian music doesn’t often reach other countries on the same level that bands from the US do, so for all our international readers. I’ll get right to it: Todays article is debuting a music video for a song called “Part Ways” by In Passing, they’re from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and they blend up melodic hardcore with a good dose of metalcore and emo influences to make up one truly special cocktail that I will binge upon until I’m ill.
Counterparts, Defeater, Touche Amore & Misery Signals are all clear influences shining through this band of self proclaimed sadboiz, but paying homage to the lighter sides of metalcore and post / melodic hardcore has been done by many, yet mastered by very few, and none are on the same level as these boys. In Passing are back to writing their unique brand of emotionally vulnerable, melodic-hardcore with a self-released three song EP titled: Flowers Placed Upon My Grave.
I had a quick chat with their vocalist Dylan about the new tunes and where In Passing is headed for 2025.
TO START OFF, WHAT’S THE BANDS WRITING PROCESS USUALLY CONSIST OF?
Dylan: Usually someone will bring the band a template of a song, mostly fleshed out if not entirely structured. We will then iterate on the parts and we’ll put our spin on our respective parts and further flesh things out until we have a fully formed song.”
HOW WAS FLOWERS UPON MY GRAVE RECORDED?
Dylan: “We’re totally DIY on the recording front. Demos are done at home on laptops, then we’ll convert our jam space to a recording room to track for the final recording. We recorded Flowers Placed Upon My Grave from June to September 2024. Shoutout Luc Chiasson who mixed and mastered it all. We gave him a crazy timeline to get us the first mix and he came through.”
“FLOWERS PLACED UPON MY GRAVE IS A LONG TIME COMING. WE HAD THE OPENING TRACK, CARRY ON, WRITTEN AND IN OUR LIVE SET BEFORE OUR FIRST EP EVEN CAME OUT. THIS EP IS OUR MOST EMOTIONALLY RAW AND VUNERABLE TO DATE. HOPEFULLY THOSE LISTENING TO THE EP WILL RESONATE WITH THE THEMES AND MUSIC AND FEEL SOMETHING”.

ANY SHOWS COMING UP ?
Dylan: “Nothing yet, but things in the works. Stay tuned.”
SO WHAT’S NEXT FOR IN PASSING?
Dylan: “Keeping on the grind. We’ve played four shows in the last four years so we’re aiming to up the ratio of shows per year. We’ll hopefully release more music in the near future as well.”
