thiscouldneverwork - someday, not today

Occasionally you get get a taste of something new in a live setting, rush off to get your greedy hands on whatever recordings exist and find that the live performance was all the more powerful and the recording was lacking. Now, I haven’t seen thiscouldneverwork live, but if the seven song debut from the Reno, Nevada group is a portent of what is to be, then we’re in for a treat.

In checking in with the band prior to this article it was imperative that there was some understanding behind the recording process. There are some incredible qualities that shine through the raw energy, the squealing feedback, and those pained vocals. The group wrote the album and then recorded the songs in their entirety in a whiplash session with a friend who had access to a recording studio (and a school project to complete). Swept up in the recording process and presumably passing the class, there wasn’t much time left to record, leaving the group with only an hour to knock out these songs. What you hear in these songs are first and second takes, no punch-ins and do-over-and-over-and-over, then mixed and mastered by the band.

“THE ALBUM AT THIS POINT WAS EXACTLY WHAT WE WERE PLAYING AS OUR LIVE SET.”

- LAV @THISCOULDNEVERWORK

Today we share the track “someday, not today,” which shares its name with the freshly released EP of the same name.  The track opens with this clean(ish) guitar riff and this slight warble that seems to permeate throughout the record (in a pleasing way). The vocals are a standout, they are archetypal screams vocals, where the raw emotion stands out. The clean riff and shouting dominate half the track before barreling headfirst into absolute madness, triplets beneath the cacophony of vocals. The track ends in feedback coupled with dominating bass riffs that has me stomping my foot on the floor.

This is a band that has me crossing me fingers that they'll land themselves on a nice tour and make their way through the states -- seems like this group would have an incredible live set. I'm excited to hear more and more from thiscouldneverwork in the future.
